A drabble to accompany wanderingbusker's entry for Kiss for eyecandy_69.
Kiss **** I sat and listened patiently.
He was my best mate and she’d hurt him; it was the least I could do.
Of course, she was my best mate, too.
But she was currently in Spain, studying advanced arithmancy, and she wasn’t the one who’d been dumped.
And, to be brutally honest, she wasn’t the one I was in love with.
“She said I’d thank her for it, Harry,” he said, for what was probably the fifth time. “She said we’d really only come together as a comfort thing on the Horcrux hunt; that I’d never have turned to her otherwise.”
“Hmmm,” I said neutrally. I’d had an awful lot of practise at staying neutral over the years.
“What am I gonna do, Harry?” he asked pitifully, and I could think of several answers I shouldn’t give. “She’s the only girl I ever cared for.”
“Well, there you go,” I said and bit my lip. I’d really only meant to make supportive noises.
“What?” he said, frowning at the interruption to his monologue.
“Cared for,” I said.
“What’s wrong with ‘cared for’?” he asked indignantly.
“It’s not ‘loved’,” I said. “For you to really be this upset, it should have been, ‘the only girl I ever loved’.”
He blinked at me. “I am upset,” he said. “I’m heartbroken. Two years…”
“You’re offended and you’re lonely,” I interrupted again. “But you’re not heartbroken.”
He reblinked.
“You were comfortable with Hermione,” I said. “And you relied on Hermione, but you were never in love with Hermione. And you could be so much happier, do so much better.”
He frowned at me, looking terribly confused. “I don’t see how,” he said.
I sighed.
“What?” he said.
So I took his face between my hands and kissed him.
