Ginny tracked her friend down to the library, of course, as N.E.W.T.s were in six weeks time, and Hermione had just taken the whole weekend off homework to spend time with Ron in Hogsmeade.
Hermione was in the Arithmancy section, wedged between two teetering piles of books, scribbling frantic notes on a long roll of parchment. Ginny sat down and waited until Hermione came to a natural pause, marked her place, tethered a chunk of hair behind her ear, rubbed her eyes with inky fingers and looked up.
"Should I be worried about my brother?" Ginny asked quietly.
"No," Hermione said, frowning. "Wait, why should you? What's happened?"
"Nothing's happened," Ginny said, shrugging slightly. "It was just something Harry said, yesterday…but he didn't seem to think it was all that…"
She sighed.
"Ginny," Hermione said. "What's wrong? What did he say?"
"I wasn't going to say anything," Ginny said earnestly. "I know you worry about both of them, and you're finding it… hard, to let go and have them take care of themselves."
"You make me sound like I'm their mother," Hermione protested.
Ginny gave her a steady look and she waved it away.
"What's wrong?" she repeated.
"I wasn't going to say anything, and, well, Harry didn't seem too worried," Ginny admitted, "but he did say something odd about their training."
"Their training?" Hermione echoed. "Ron didn't say anything; he said he was tired, and it was hard work, but he didn't say anything was wrong. What about their training?"
"Harry said they've been doing work on… well, on resisting torture," Ginny said.
Hermione gasped, her hand flying to her throat.
"Oh, no, no one's actually Crucioing them, or anything," Ginny assured her. "They're working on mental techniques to resist and block out pain and… stuff."
"And is Ron… too upset by it?" Hermione asked quietly.
"Oh, no," Ginny reassured her, "quite the opposite."
"The opposite of upset?" Hermione spluttered. "He's… enjoying the thought of torture?"
"No, don't be silly," Ginny said. "Look. Harry is doing fine with it; just think of what he's faced, bless him. The idiot. But he's been through it all before, and isn't upset about picturing it and blocking it out. But he was baffled by Ron's attitude. Harry thought he'd have to look after him, expected him to be all upset about having to picture it, because of… Malfoy Manor, and everything, but he's… completely blasé about it."
"About what happened?" Hermione asked. "To me?"
"Not about what happened to you," Ginny said firmly. "About what he's picturing to resist torture. Harry says Ron hasn't been practised the techniques they've been taught and he just laughs and says he's used to resisting torture, and no baby Death Eater is going to be able to torment him like…"
"Like"?
"Like… you do," Ginny admitted. "Harry just laughed about it, and thinks he means… what you put each other through, over the years, but Harry can be pretty thick about things like this and. And I wondered what you've been doing to my brother?"
"Ginny!" Hermione gasped. "I don't torture your brother!"
"I'm not picturing you tying him up and Crucioing him," Ginny said, "mainly because I want to be able to sleep at night. But I don't think he was joking; I think he's using something you've done to him to help him block out torture at work, and… that's not healthy…"
"Well, I completely haven't done anything that could…" Hermione trailed off, blinking rapidly.
"What?" Ginny asked.
"No," Hermione breathed, "nothing."
"What is it?" Ginny persisted.
"He couldn't… even Ron couldn't… it wasn't torture…"
"Hermione."
"It's nothing," Hermione said unconvincingly. "Just a… sexual thing, that I am quite sure you don't want to know about."
"A sexual thing?" Ginny asked. "Are you saying Ron will be fine with Death Eaters torturing him, because you… because he enjoys… has George had you both trying out his nipple clamps? Because they need a warning about the top setting."
"What?" Hermione squeaked. "No!"
"Then what have you done to him?" Ginny persisted.
"Well, it's the only thing I can think of," Hermione said airily. "And he did say it was torture, but he was only joking; I can't imagine he'd picture it to block out Death Eaters torturing him."
Ginny blinked pointedly.
"And he's so much bigger than me," Hermione went on earnestly. "I can't actually hold him down, so he's only playing."
"Hermione!"
"Well," she said unwillingly. "All I can think of is that sometimes I, when I've… mounted him… I pin his hands to the bed and I… pause…"
"Pause?" Ginny echoed. "Pause where?"
"Pause with him not quite…" She nodded significantly.
"Not quite…" Ginny prompted.
"Inside me," Hermione whispered, flushing.
Ginny's eyebrows flew up into her hairline. "Inside you?" she croaked.
"He likes it," Hermione protested. "He moans and complains and pretends he can't throw off my hands and… thrust… and he says I'm torturing him, but I'm only… extending the anticipation, until I… lower myself."
"Merlin," Ginny squeaked.
"But I really don't want him thinking of that if he's actually being tortured," Hermione pouted. "Picturing himself… entering me?"
"Well," Ginny said, shrugging, "whatever works for him, I suppose?"
"Still," Hermione said. "What if he's captured by a Legilimens? I wouldn't be able to show my face!"
"Focus, Hermione," Ginny protested. "If Ron is actually captured, wouldn't you be pleased he held it together, even if it was by picturing you… mounting him?"
"Well, if you put it like that," Hermione said bravely, lifting her chin and biting her lip, "then I suppose I don't mind who sees it."
"Except," Ginny mused. "There's the security risk."
"Except what?" Hermione asked. "I don't see how Ron fantasising about me can be a security risk."
"I really don't like the thought of Ron putting Harry at risk, like this," Ginny said, frowning, "and nor will he, when I point it out to him."
"You are not saying anything to Ron about this," Hermione said, "and how on earth is Harry in any danger from my sex life?"
"Well," Ginny said. "Poor Harry is practising his blocking techniques and assuming he'll be fighting off the Cruciatus. He wouldn't stand a chance if Death Eaters watch Ron's fantasies and then project them into Harry's mind."
