Sirius had been swearing colourfully for twenty minutes and Remus couldn't take it anymore.

"You know, I really, really doubt that you're in that much pain," he said, looking up from his book.

"What do you know?" Sirius said, grumpily, sprawling on the couch and resting his head in Remus' lap.

Remus raised a sceptical eyebrow.

"I think I know a thing or two about pain," he said.

Sirius grunted.

"I am scarred for life," he said dramatically.

"Do you really want to compare scars?" Remus asked.

"No," Sirius pouted.

"It's your own fault," Remus said. "You knew James would be home soon, you didn't have to be on her bed."

"I did," Sirius said. "And Lily wanted me to. I just wasn't expecting the blood."

He held up his hand pathetically and Remus sighed and took it, bending to examine the marks on his palm.

Four perfect crescents, two of which had, indeed drawn blood as Lily had dug in her nails.

"Why are her nails so sharp, anyway?" Sirius demanded. "She'll be holding a baby any minute now."

"Well," Remus said. "It's your Godson being born; you can think of them as birthmarks."
