The Return **** It had been a horrible blur from the moment Harry had killed Nagini.
They had been on the banks of Lake Bala and had run into Voldemort and his familiar. It had been the first time that Ron had actually seen the Dark Lord, and he had been shit-scared.
The shock in the air when Harry had gone for the snake and not the Master had been palpable. There had been a moment when Voldemort stared at his dead snake, at the repository of a part of his very soul and they could see him realising that Harry had done it deliberately, that Harry knew about the Horcruxes.
His face had blazed with hatred and he had swirled his cloak around him and strode out onto the surface of the lake.
The three of them had stared in disbelief, not knowing what to do. It was too soon for Harry to go after him, there was still Hufflepuff’s Cup to find and destroy, but what was he doing?
Voldemort started to spin. Faster and faster, drawing the water with him until a giant whirlpool had formed in the centre of the lake. Then he had sunk out of sight and the water had closed over his head.
“What the fuck?” Ron had gasped.
“Where has he gone?” asked Hermione.
“Hogwarts,” Harry had shouted.
“What?” they both boggled at him.
He rounded on them and grabbed Ron’s arm. “Where have we seen that whirlpool before? The lake at Hogwarts – Karkaroff must have told him how they got the ship through for the Triwizard. We have to get to the school! He must have hidden the Cup there.”
They looked at each other for a frozen moment and then Ron and Hermione nodded – they had learned to trust Harry’s judgement on this Quest, and they knew they had to warn the teachers, had to do something.
With three pops they Apparated to the gates in front of the school and set off through the grounds, at a run.
It seemed the arrival of the Dark Lord had not gone unnoticed, and Professor McGonagall was standing, with her staff behind her, on the bank of the lake, wands raised.
The dark water of the lake was still churning from the effects of the whirlpool, and Voldemort was standing on the waves a little way out.
Harry, Ron and Hermione skidded to a halt beside their former teachers and Voldemort turned unsteadily to face them.
Voldemort’s eyes burned with hatred as they focused on Harry and he raised his wand. Knowing that it was too soon, that the final Horcrux was hidden somewhere within the castle, and that Harry could not face him yet, Ron stepped between them, to the very edge of the lake, the water washing over his trainers.
Voldemort gave a high, cold laugh, obviously unimpressed with Ron’s gesture of defiance, and negligently flicked his wand and hissed “Avada Kedavra”. Everyone watched in silence as Ron raised his chin and stood his ground, but suddenly there was movement in the roiling water.
Just before the curse struck the slender young man, a large shape thrust up out of the water, taking the blow and knocking Ron to the ground as it fell once more.
Ron didn’t notice Voldemort being driven back beneath the surface by the teachers; he didn’t notice Harry and Hermione standing side by side, watching him in stunned silence.
He scrambled onto his hands and knees and gently turned the still figure over, gathering it into his lap.
Rocking gently, he cradled the Squid in his arms and stroked its face. Remembering.
