They never even thought to ask me for help.

OK, it wasn’t until after the event that Harry knew he needed the Gillyweed. It wasn’t like they were looking for a magical plant and never thought of asking me.

They were looking for a way to survive under water, which I admit I am not famous for, and they didn’t tell anyone else what they were researching.

All we knew on the day of the challenge was that Ron and Hermione were two of the hostages, in an enchanted sleep at the bottom of the lake.

Then Harry came flying down the lawns from the school, stripping off his shoes and socks and chewing up and swallowing something that looked completely disgusting. Then he flopped into the water and disappeared.

And while everyone else was fretting about the safety of the hostages, or the Charms that the champions had used, all I could think was that Ron was what Harry would ‘Sorely Miss’, and that he would never even realise that I existed.

I couldn’t help daydreaming about how things could have been different, that this could have been my chance.

They could have been in the dorm, and talking about the Task, and Ron could have said to the rest of us, “Look, have any of you ever heard of a way to survive under water for an hour?” And Dean and Seamus would have shrugged.

And I would have said, “Yeah. There’s a plant called Gillyweed; makes you grow gills and webbed feet and everything.”

And he would have looked at me, and his face would have lit up with that lopsided smile, and he would have slung an arm round my shoulders, and he might have said, “You’ve saved the day, Nev.”

And even though he would still be the thing that Harry missed most, and even though he would still be at the bottom of that lake, tied to the kelp-strangled statue, and even though Harry and Ron would still come bursting through the surface of the lake, shaking the water out of their hair and clinging to each other.

Maybe Ron would have looked at me differently afterwards. Maybe his eyes would have lit up when he saw me.

Maybe.

Oh, poor Neville - he was second fiddle for so long. *pets Neville*

Don't worry, Nev, you'll get your moment to shine, and then you'll get all the girls, too!
