Happy Enough - R/L H/Hr - G
Title: Happy enough
Author: [info]shocfix
Pairing: Harry/Hermione, Ron/Luna
Rating: G
Words: 700

This is for my beloved [info]chickadilly and [info]psychic_serpent, who understand how the world works. Yes.

Knocked together very quickly, I’m afraid, and I know that you could both have done it better, but the bunny wouldn’t let go of my ankle.

Happy enough
****
Hermione watched her best friend revolving slowly in the middle of the room and her heart broke. How had it come to this? How had she lost Ron? Why had she never told him how she felt? And now it was too late.

All through school she had adored him. Yes, he drove her crazy, yes he was insufferable, and rude and annoying, and gorgeous, and kind, and he took such good care of her.

Oh, he always knew how to push her buttons, but she – and everyone else – had always thought that that was just his adorable, boyish was of stirring her passionate side, without having to actually tell her how he felt about her.

She had certainly always used it as an excuse to see his eyes snap with emotion and his face flush. To imagine that adored face poised, joyously over her.

She was so sure that one day he would crack in the middle of an argument, and tell her he loved her.

Yet here she was, watching him smiling down fatuously at his bride, murmuring into her ear as they danced. Smiling at his wife.

“Stop glaring at the bride, Hermione,” Harry murmured, sitting beside her and handing her a drink.

She turned to glare at him. “I am not glaring,” she hissed.

“Well, stop drooling over the groom, then,” he teased.

“Oh, Harry,” she moaned. “How did it come to this? I always thought…”

“You always thought Ron felt for you like you felt for him.”

“Yeah. I’m pathetic.”

“You’re far from pathetic,” Harry said, taking her hand. “You just love him. I always knew that. Everyone always knew that. Everyone but Ron!”

“I should have told him.”

“You can’t make someone love you back, Hermione,” Harry said. “I know that. I told her how I felt.”

”Oh, Harry! I didn’t know.” She squeezed his hand, tightly.

“This is probably all my fault, you know.”

“Oh, don’t be silly. I should have told Ron years ago.”

“Maybe. But after the final Battle, when we were all OK, I decided I deserved my own life. And I decided that, now that I wouldn’t be putting her in danger anymore, by telling her how I felt, that I would speak to Luna. She came to the Hospital Wing, and when she came over to see me, I told her. I told her how much I loved her, and that she was the only person I had ever met who had such a big heart, such an open, optimistic heart. That seeing her lit up my days, and that endangering her had kept me from speaking, but that now we could be together.”

“And what did she say?” Hermione covered his hand with her free hand and stroked his knuckles.

“She smiled sadly at me. That beautiful, gentle smile. And she said that she had been waiting for danger to pass, too. So she could tell ‘Ronald’ how she felt. And then she went over to his bed and she sat by his side until he woke. I had to watch her take his hand and push his hair back out of his eyes and she spoke quietly and gently and he smiled back up at her and she bent down to kiss him.”

“Oh, Harry! What a pair we make.”

He put his arm around her and rested his cheek on her hair. “I always thought that Luna understood me like no one else; that we would be together.”

“And I always thought that Ron understood me, too.”

“What a pair,” he brushed his lips against her cheek and she tensed in his arms.

“Harry?” she asked. “What are you doing?”

He smiled sadly down at her. “Helping a friend feel better about herself?” and he ghosted a kiss closer to the corner of her mouth.

“Harry!” she breathed, shifting to look up into his sincere, green eyes.

“Let me take care of you, Hermione?” he asked, sliding his lips finally onto hers. “We can be happy enough.”

“Happy enough,” she replied, leaning into his kiss.

She watched Ron and Luna together over his shoulder, gazing into each other’s eyes as they danced, then let her tear-filled eyes fall closed.

You wrote a Harry/Hermione that I don't hate, because it's sad and they're settling and they'll never be happy, not really, which is how it'd be!

it's the only way it could be, yes... this came out of a conversation with two R/Hr people, over how Ron/Luna could be lovely, but it's always finding somewhere to stick him, to get him out of the way, for the perfection of H/Hr... which is the wrong way round!

but they could settle for each other, if he was happy...
