A Big Step **** Tracey stopped outside the Room of Requirement, appearing very nervous. She looked up at Blaise and shook her head. “I’m not so sure about this, Blaise,” she said. “I know we said we were ready to try the next step, but I am so having second thoughts.”
Blaise tried very hard not to roll his eyes. “We don’t have to do it if you don’t want to, Tracey, but I thought we talked about it for long enough.”
She leaned against the wall and ran her shaking fingers through her hair. She took a deep breath and sighed dramatically. She stamped her foot and huffed.
Blaise rolled his eyes, then stepped up to her side and held her arms with his strong, capable hands. “Really, sweetheart. We can go back to the Common Room – or go for a walk, or something. It’ll be OK.”
She bit her lip and looked up at him. “But you want to, don’t you?” she asked in a small voice.
“I do,” he said firmly, “but we agreed that we would only do it when we were both ready. It’s a big step, Tracey. Neither of us has ever… well… Look, we’ll wait until you are sure.”
“I do want to, Blaise,” she said, resting her head on his chest. “The Dark Lord really is back, and we could die any day. You know that Draco has taken the Mark – your father could tell you to any time. Any time. I don’t want to die without… Before… Ugh.” She stamped her foot again.
Blaise frowned and stroked her hair. “We shouldn’t do it just because we could die any day, Tracey. We should only do it if it feels right.”
She stepped away from him and gave him a rather wobbly smile. “It feels right. It is right. And there is no one I would rather do it with, Blaise – you know that, right?”
He smiled back. “Ditto, sweetheart,” he said and kissed her on the forehead.
Holding out his hand, he gestured to the closed door with his head. “Ready?”
She squared her shoulders and put her hand in his. “Ready.”
Hand-in-hand they walked to the door and Blaise turned the handle and they entered the legendary room.
Utter silence met them as thirty heads swivelled to look at them. “What d’you want?” demanded Harry Potter.
“We want to join the Defence Association,” said Blaise firmly.
